On page 68, Jose Arcadio Buendia says that "Love is a disease." What evidence is there of the destructive powers of love and lust in this novel in terms of how an individual can be affected and the impact it can have on relationships?
Choose a particular character to evaluate. Determine whether the character traits you have noted are ultimately positive or negative, or both. Explain your reasoning. For example Jose Arcadio Buendia: He is inventive and spends many hours alone on his alchemy experiments trying to discover already known science. This is ultimately negative, because he isolates himself from his family and eventually goes mad.

I'm writing in regard to the 3rd prompt. I find the whole relationship between Aureliano and Remedios to be quite disturbing. On page 74, the book talks about how Aureliano would teach Remedios to read and write. If a young child needs to still learn the basics of reading and writing there is no way that she should even be thinking about marriage let alone to someone who is old enough to be her father. Another weird piece of information was that she still hadn't gone through puberty and Aureliano still wanted to marry her. My question is do you think that Remedios and Aureliano will be wed even though Ursula swore they would only be married over her dead body?
ReplyDeletevery well spoken mr. jaeger

DeleteI will answer the 3rd prompt. I think its interesting that the author keeps the love theme going this chapter. Its weird that Aureliano keeps thinking about Remedios and actually wants to marry her. Ursula talks with Remedios' mother and she tells Areliano that Remedios has not gone through puberty yet and that doesnt bother him. Do you think its odd that someone of his age is in love with someone so young? He teaches her how to read and write, almost like his own daughter. Rebecca also wants to marry Pietro, but Amaranta makes it seem like she wont let it happen. Do you think Rebecca and Pietro will end up getting married even though Amaranta is doing everything in her power to stop it?
ReplyDeleteI think it is weird that Aureliano can love someone that young especially when he is in his late twenties and she hasn't hit puberty. It kinda creeps me out because she is young enough to be his father, but i guess with the way Magic Realism works in this book time and age don't seem to be a huge deal. I wonder how the relationship will play out in future chapters especially because the fathers are enemies.
DeleteI found it interesting that on page 59, the chapter starts out that on one afternoon Ursula saw that Rebeca and Armananta changed into adolescents. This is another example of the illusion of time in this novel. I find it interesting that time has no boundaries in this book. I think it makes it easier for the author to tell the story and it also allows the author to include more perspectives of the characters at different ages.
ReplyDeletereally good story brenna
Deletethanks babe ;)
DeleteThe character I am choosing is Rebecca. She is different as she doesn't eat regular things, she also spends a lot of time doing things such as sitting in a rocking chair and sucking her finger. When she came to the town, the only thing that she brought with her were her parents bones, and the rocking chair. I would think that these traits are more on the negative side. The are different. Rebecca also brings with her the contagious disease of insomnia, which isn't good.
ReplyDeleteRebecca hasnt really done anything good for the city of Macondo besides help Ursula with manual work. She infected the whole city with insomnia. She is now going to marry Pietro but it is going to cause some drama within the family because Amaranta doesnt want to let that happen. It will be interesting to see how that relationship turns out.
DeleteI'm writing in regaurd to the third prompt. I thought the part at the end when Jose Arcadio Buendia, started to go crazy and they tied him to the tree was interesting. He started to foam at the mouth and speak in different languages. No one cold figure out was wrong with him but i predict he could be haviing some sort of exorcism or that the fumes and materials he was working around, like Mercury, 24/7 started to make his brain go a little crazy. I will be intereted to seeing what happens in the future with Jose.
ReplyDeleteI agree and think that that is a interesting take on it. I was pretty confused as to what was going on when i read that but it would definitely make sense that it could be some kind of poisoning like mercury or something. Im curious to find out what happens to hime jose.
DeleteI'm writing in response to the 2nd prompt and going to evaluate Rebeca. I think that she characteristics are ultimately negative. On page 65 it said that the mailman did not come and she went out to the yard and started eating the dirt with a suicidal drive. She has attachment and control issues. She was obsessed with Pietro and began to go crazy just because he never sent her a letter. I say that all of this makes her ultimately negative because her obsession made her want to commit suicide even though she didn't know him for very long.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Catherine, I think Rebeca is very unstable and the fact that she is resorting to her old habits kind of shows that she is almost breaking down mentally. I would definitely agree that Rebeca is a negative character.
DeleteI agree with Cathrine. I don't think Rebecca has really done anything positive for the people she is with. She eats different food and brought the disease of insomnia to the city they live in. She is in love with Pietro and is just as crazy as Armanta who is also in love with Pietro. Both of them would do anything to just marry him, which I find kind of scary.
DeleteI'm responding to the first prompt of "Love is a disease." Evidence from in the book is the affects it had on Rebecca once Pietro left. Rebecca developed a little crush on pianola player Pietro, and turned into a wreck when he parted ways. She started sucking on her fingers again, and eventually even went back to munching on dirt or earth. This is supportive of "love is a disease" because once Rebecca's lover left, her life and mood just steadily started decreasing and she acted worse, much like a disease.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Geordon when he says that the saying, "love is a disease" is shown in One Hundred Years of Solitude. I agree with his evidence and I also believe that when Aureliano is going crazy over Remedios he also is showing that "love is a disease". The author talks about how he could not focus on anything and spent a lot of time in his lab. Also Ursula talks about how she finds tear-soaked letters that Rebeca wrote to Pietro. I think this is another example of how "love is a disease".
DeleteI am writing as a response to the first prompt. I think that this novel has showed us that love is a disease. As Jose Arcadio walked out on Pilar for a gypsy I think that is a great example of love being a disease. "Falling in love" can make people make questionable decisions, as Jose Arcadio made when he walked out on Pilar. This can affect relationships because certain decisions like the example i gave above can ruin relationships.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you and your example of how Jose Arcadio walked out on Pilar. Love in some cases is still a disease today, some people can't continue on with their lives unless they are in love, or some sort of relationship.
DeleteI agree with Ricky because i think that love can make you do things you may thing are right but can end up hurting a lot of people in the end. Going with want your heart wants you to do may be what can make you happy but isn't always the right choice to make.
DeleteI also Agree with Ricky-D. For example, look at John Edwards, he was running for president thought he loved this other women even though he had a wife with cancer that he would always take care of and he had kids that loved him but he was caught up in lust over this new women that he made decisions that I bet he now looks back on and regrets. In my opinion i think that love can be a form of lust. Ali also has a good point at the end of her comment. Your heart may lead you to be happy but it may not always be the right choice/ option.
DeleteI agree with Ricky, love can make you do crazy things, and I think when Jose Arcadio walked out on Pilar and their unborn child, it was his new love for the gypsy that made him do it. But after his love for the gyspy wears off he might regret leaving his unborn son
DeleteI agree with Ricky about the love being a disease because all of the relationships in this story are kind of infectious and make me a little sick. I mean Pilar is made out to be very promiscuous and the fact that Ursula and JAB are married cousins is just a testament to what Ricky said about being a disease and bad decision making.
DeleteI'm responding to the 2nd prompt. The man Pietro, is described as a handsome man. He spends his time trying to fix the pianola, he teaches the other family members how to dance and in a way he kind of bonds them together more during a hard part of their life.
ReplyDeleteVery well said Mr. Salamanca. Well spoken job of describing Pietro's physical characteristics, as well as his impact in the lives of the Buendia familia. The only point I would like to add is the part where you said he bonds the family together. I semi-disagree with that, and I say this because he causes a little rivalry between Rebecca and Amaranta. As you stated earlier, Pietro is a handsome man, which causes both Amaranta and Rebecca to both develop a little crush on Pietro. Being that he can't marry both he chooses Rebecca, which causes Amaranta to be enraged with jealousy, actually tearing the familia apart a little bit.
DeleteLike^ (for your use of "familia")
DeleteI'm responding to the first prompt. The author puts a lot of emphasis on how much Rebecca is suffering from love sickness from her love Pietro. It shows that love can make you resort back to horrible habbits such as Rebecca's habbit to eat dirt. Also, Aureliano's love for little Romedios was causing him to stop focusing on work and make him write meaningless poetry. He also lost the drive to be productive if he couldn't have this little girl.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Chris here. I do see that the author has put a lot of emphasis on how much Rebecca is suffering from love sickness. I like how you gave two examples. These things happen in real life and i think we can relate from real to the story.
DeleteI'm writing in response to the second prompt and I'm going to evaluate Aureliano. Aureliano is a very strange character. As a child we find out that he is psychic when he can tell that the soup is going to fall off the table. Then, later in the story we find out that he marries a nine year old girl. This is just creepy and inhumane. So for both of these reasons I think that Aureliano is both a negative and positive character in this book.
ReplyDeleteI agree with krum. I think that Aureliano is a very strange character, and causes many problems in the Buendia family. He has had many moments that have made him sound very intelligent, but also times where he managed to make some big mistakes. Aureliano marrying Remedios is very creepy and I predict it will cause many problems later in the book.
DeleteI also agree with Alex, because Aureliano is very weird, he has mystical powers and which we now know is some kid of psychic powers, I think its a good character to have in the book no matter what he does.
DeleteI will talk about the third prompt. I thought the language used in page 21 was very tempered. I thought it showed a lot of different emotion, mainly about the rumors that were affecting Ursula and Jose Arcadio Buendia and how Prudencio Aguilar truely angered Jose to the point of Jose killing him.
ReplyDeleteI'm writing in response for the first prompt. Jose Arcadio Buendia is definitely right the statement 'love is a disease' in more ways than one. One particular example stuck out to me in this chapter. The love triangle of Rebecca, Pietro, and Armananta will be playing a large part in the upcoming parts of the book. This love triangle has caused for bad habits to return to Rebecca because of the absence of Pietro, but also it has caused Armananta to turn against her sister. Armananta is willing to kill her own sister because she is in love with the same man.
ReplyDeleteWhen he says that love is a disease i think that mean that once you are in love ing is really hard to fall out of love. That love can start small and grow to become much bigger and then the larger it is the harder it is to get rid of. In the book Jose Arcadio Buendia left Pilar to be with the gypsy. Pilar was going to have his child yet he still went with the gypsy. i think this shows that love can make you do things that are not always the right thing.
ReplyDeletei agree with this because we see people sacrifice things that they want for what's better for the one they love. People also make stupid decisions for the ones they love. for example these two kids glued themselves to each other so one couldnt move away, stupid, but it proves ali's point of the larger love is the harder it is to get rid of .
Delete2nd prompt: Rebeca is messed up yo! That is to say that her traits are negative. The whole sucking on her fingers thing should have stopped when she was like 10! And yeah we've all eaten dirt before, like she does on page 65, and probably gotten a worm or two in there (jk), but what shes going through sounds more like Pica! (a disease where people eat weird stuff cuz their body thinks it needs the nutrients.) It aint good.
ReplyDeleteIn response to prompt number one. I think love has a destructive power in this book. One example is that Armaranta will do whatever it takes to make sure Rebecca doesn't marry the guy she likes. Armaranta would even kill her if it met stopping the wedding because she loves the guy so much.
ReplyDeleteI think love can be a disease because sometimes when people fall in love, one can fall out of love while the other still wants to be in the relationship. that can make a person do crazy things, they will stalk the person or do things that they think are protecting the person but really its hurting them. people can be crazy.
ReplyDeleteI think that love can we so painful at times that you think you will never achieve it, but the more you look for love instead of just letting something fall into your lap is when you wont find it. It must be natural and it will feel amazing beyond your dreams.
ReplyDeleteI agree with grace that one can fall out of love while the other person wants to be in a relationship. One person will always have different feels and know things are true in their heart they just need a opportunity.
Very well said Mr. Fazio I agree with your description of love. I also think this story depicts a different view of love, that is more "within" the family.
DeleteI think its interesting how Jose Arcadio walked out on Pilar and his unborn child. i think its crazy that he slept with Pilar in the first place, considering shes old and smelly. but i think that Jose Arcadio will come back soon but he will be a completely different person
ReplyDeletePilar may have been old and smelly, but if i remember correctly, in the book it said that Jose Arcadio said that her smell is the reason that he loved her so much. He was obsessed with the say she smelt.
Delete**way
DeleteIn regards to the second prompt, i will try to explain what Rebecca does. She is one weird lady. She sits in the corner, doesn't really talk to anyone, picks up dirt and eats it. She also picks off chunks of the wall and eats it. At least if they end up running out of food, she will be in good shape.
